HAN-TEK Bucket-Crane Modernization
Upgrade cuts cement plant's energy consumption in half
(VICTOR, N.Y., Dec. 15, 2004) – HAN-TEK, Inc., has developed
a Bucket-Crane Modernization that allows a cement manufacturer to reduce
its energy consumption by 50 percent – a savings that is expected
to pay for the investment in two years.
HAN-TEK designed, engineered, manufactured and installed electromotive
upgrades to the customer’s mammoth, 10-ton bucket crane that redistributes
material in its cement-manufacturing operation. Previously the crane
consumed electricity continuously, though it was needed only half the
time the plant was operating, to redistribute and store overflow raw
material. Further, its on-board DC generator had become increasingly
unreliable and difficult and costly to repair.
“By using AC inverter variable-frequency drives rather than the
old DC and collector-bar system, this crane upgrade permits our customer
to operate with far greater efficiency,” says Todd VandeSande,
vice president of HAN-TEK. “Lower energy bills mean our customer
will recoup its investment in about two years. The company is also saving
money and minimizing downtime because the HAN-TEK solution is easier
and less expensive to maintain and repair.”
A key challenge, VandeSande says, was designing a solution that would
function effectively in the excessively dusty environment characteristic
of cement manufacturing. The HAN-TEK solution features seven totally
enclosed severe-duty motors with blower or fan cooling to reduce dust
exposure. Electromotive controls are now enclosed in double box-frame
girders, which shield the controls from dust and enhance worker safety.
The upgrades were installed by HAN-TEK’s MSHA-certified technicians
according to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration codes.
In accordance with the customer’s specs, VandeSande adds that
HAN-TEK also designed the Bucket-Crane Modernization to link to the
plant’s internal network via radio control.
